The ABA Commission on Immigration is seeking Spanish-speaking attorneys with removal defense experience to volunteer on our Immigration Detention Hotline. Volunteers answer calls from individuals in immigration detention across the country who have questions about their legal rights, detention conditions, expedited removal, and options for release.
The need is urgent. As of July 27, 2025, more than 56,000 individuals are held in immigration detention – over 140% of the system’s capacity of 41,500 beds. Reports continue to raise serious concerns about conditions in many facilities.
Volunteer Information & Requirements:
- Shifts are fully remote and take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30am-12:00pm ET; and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. ET
- Volunteers must have 3+ years of experience in removal defense and must be fluent in Spanish
- Volunteers are provided with a comprehensive training course ahead of their first shift, along with a detailed Talking Points guide, and real-time support from ABA mentors during calls
- Calls involve providing information and referrals, rather than full legal representation
To sign up, please complete this registration form. You will receive a link to the training materials once you register.
Please share with any qualified colleagues who may be interested. Thank you for considering this meaningful opportunity to support individuals navigating the immigration detention system. Reach out to Stephanie.Baez@americanbar.org with any questions.
